HAP Paul Award

€5,000 and Lifetime ISTA Membership

This award is given to submissions describing original contributions to the science and technology of arthroplasty. The award is given in honor of Howard A. “HAP” Paul, DVM, who was one of the charter members of ISTA and a tireless clinician-researcher pioneering advances in arthroplasty and surgical robotics. In addition to the award, a special extended presentation will be scheduled in a plenary session to allow the winner to present their award-winning work from the podium.

  • The applicant must be a senior researcher in the field and be available to present his/her work at the Annual Meeting.
  • The work described should go beyond a single study, and entail multiple aspects of a research topic, analysing these aspects from multiple perspectives leading to a rather holistic assessment of the research topic.
  • The research topic should fit within the field of Technology in Arthroplasty and the themes as published in the Bone and Joint Journal.
  • The paper must be uploaded as one single file in Word format which includes the images and tables.

Early Career Investigator Award

€3,000

This award will be presented to the best paper submitted by an early career investigator* on research related to the field of arthroplasty. A special extended presentation will be scheduled in a plenary session to allow the winner to present their award-winning work from the podium.

If you are submitting for the Early Career investigator Award please upload your paper through your Exordo account.

  • The applicant must be the principal creator of the work presented and be available to present his/her work at the Annual Meeting.
  • To be eligible for this award, applicants must be enrolled in a formal course of training (e.g. PhD, MD) in Engineering, Science or Medicine (or another field of study related to Technology in Arthroplasty) at an accredited educational institution or have graduated from such a program within 2 years prior to the date of the Annual Meeting.
  • The paper must be uploaded as one single file in Word format which includes the images and tables.
  • The supervisor of an applicant for this award must supply written confirmation of the status of the first author and the contribution of the applicant and any co-authors to the work presented. This information should be submitted in a letter to the chairman of the Award Committee Prof Nico Verdonschot, sent to his email address n.verdonschot@utwente.nl

Award paper application guidelines

  • Full papers must be submitted by April 19th, 2025 at noon CET via the online abstract submission portal.
  • Papers should be formatted according to the Bone and Joint Journal with the exception of the 6 author limit, see full instructions on abstract submissions portal. There is no limit on the number of authors allowed on ISTA award paper submissions.
  • Submissions must not be published in any journal before the submission deadline.
  • Award paper applicants and award paper recipients are under no obligation to submit their work for publication in any journal.

Awards will be presented at the ISTA Awards Session on Friday September 19th 2025.
